What does the Level 3 Paediatric First Aid course cover?
Topics include:
- Roles and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider: Understanding the specific responsibilities and legal obligations of a first aider when it comes to providing emergency care to children.
- Recognizing and responding to common childhood emergencies: This includes knowing how to identify and appropriately respond to emergencies such as choking, breathing difficulties, allergic reactions seizures, burns and scalds.
- Emergency assessment and appropriate action. Learning how to assess an emergency situation involving a child and taking appropriate actions to ensure their safety and wellbeing. This may involve making decisions on when to seek medical assistance and how to communicate effectively with emergency services.
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR): Understanding and practising CPR techniques specifically for infants, children and adults. This includes chest compressions, rescue breaths, and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for children.
- Recovery position: Knowing how to place an unconscious child into the recovery position to maintain an open airway and prevent choking.
- Wounds, bleeding and shock: Understanding how to manage different types of wounds, control bleeding, and recognize and manage shock in children.
- Fractures, dislocations and sprains: Learning how to recognize and provide initial first aid for fractures, dislocations, and sprains in children.
- Common childhood illnesses and medical conditions: Recognizing and responding to common childhood illnesses and conditions such as asthma, croup, febrile convulsions and meningitis.
- Anaphylaxis and allergic reactions: Understanding the signs of severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) and learning how to administer an adrenaline auto-injector (such as EpiPen) in an emergency situation. To build on your knowledge, consider taking our Allergen Awareness course.
- Administering medication safely: Gaining knowledge and skills on how to administer medication safely to children, including understanding dosage, routes of administration, and legal considerations.
- Reporting and recording incidents and injuries: Understanding the importance of accurate documentation, reporting, and record keeping following incidents or injuries involving children.
The Emergency Paediatric First Aid course combines theory, practical demonstrations, and hands-on practice to ensure you feel confident administering first aid to babies and children.
How long does the course take to complete?
HABC Level 3 Paediatric First Aid is normally completed over 2 days, which is the equivalent to 15 hours of learning.
Assessment
Assessment is through observation of participants and a multiple-choice assessment.
Certification
Successful learners achieve HABC Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF).
